2023 BERG & HØEG Photostudio. Theater Corpus

Theatre Corpus is a puppet theatre show

about he lesbian photographers Marie

Høegh and Bolette Berg. In 1895

they set up a photo studio, which also

served as a meeting point for the local

suffragettes. In 1970 a box of negatives

was discovered. The photos show Marie,

Bolette and friends experimenting with

cross-gender dressing.In 2022 it was 50

years since homosexuality was de-

criminalised in Norway. We have recreated

a photo studio with original cameras,

painted backdrops and interiors. The

show focuses on three sub-cultural

phenomena in the period; the suffragette

movement, spiritism and photography

as a paranormal tool.

Photographic studios in the period had a lot of similarities to theatre stages with painted backdrops and various props and furnitures. The show alternates between puppet theatre sequences and costume based acting. On stage is a small puppet stage, a miniature of the photography studio, which also has similarities with the interior of cameras from the period.
